Rally-car 'concept' provides distinct clues to how the next Impreza WRX STi will shape up

Subaru's new base-model Impreza WRX isn't much of a looker, but the next-generation rally rocket it's spawned is dripping with aggression.

MY08 WRX frontPetter Solberg's ride for next year is set to make its maiden public appearance at this month's Frankfurt motor show -- in the form of this Impreza WRC 'Concept' Car.

According to Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru vehicles, the concept "...conjures up images of future styling trends for a world rally car."

But you can pretty much ignore the bit about the 'concept' because what you're looking at is likely to be Subaru's 2008 rally car in all its finery. The car is also an accurate indicator of how the next Impreza WRX STi (due here next February) will shape up.

The standard Impreza WRX made its debut at April's New York motor show (it's due here in September), but the mundane styling of the 'cooking model' failed to set the pulses of enthusiasts racing.

No such criticisms of the WRC concept, which scores massive flared guards, an aggressive front spoiler (with vents to cool the brakes), bi-plane rear wing and a 'don't mess' wheel-and-tyre package.

The WRC concept also seemingly gains a larger bonnet scoop and a nicely integrated rear bumper diffuser, from which protrude a pair of big-bore exhausts.

MY08 WRC BackIt all augurs well for the next-gen WRX STi, which will reportedly sport all the abovementioned kit -- barring the double-decker rear wing. Overseas sources suggest the STi will scoot to 100km/h in under five seconds and comfortably top 250km/h.

The blown 2.5-litre flat-four will reportedly eke out north of 225kW, which suggests it's set for a ding-dong battle with the upcoming Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X.

Subaru Australia recently announced that the new Impreza range will feature three naturally aspirated variants plus the turbocharged WRX and WRX STi.
