Take 9 Liberties, 2 Foresters, an MR2 and a VW Bora, mix em all up with some of the nicest twisty roads Tassie has to offer along with a dozen camera's and some video, you get an awesome day out and a story to tell.
Well, 7am was way too early to get out of bed, but these things just have to be done sometimes. Although my Fozz didn’t make the trip due to ongoing driveshaft and diff problems it gave me the opportunity to take in all of the goings on for the day, get some video of great roads and ride in a variety of different vehicles. Us 7 hardy southerners rolled into Maccas at Bridgewater for coffee and McMuffins to allow us to wake up and introduce ourselves to some new faces, before hitting the highway. We headed North into the fog in Nigel’s WGX (converted GX Liberty!!) where we found great amusement in the antics being played by his schizophrenic fuel gauge, full tank one minute, quarter of a tank the next. Also following the Brothers, Ollie and Simeon, highlighted the fact that Ollie’s car had no brakelights, so Nigel’s anticipation skills were put to the test in the foggy conditions. Campbell Town eventually emerged from the fog and after a quick stop we headed to the Epping Forest roadhouse for some more refreshments. Nigel also decided to do a quick stereo install as the rattle from the RHS rear strut and squeak from the dash were becoming unbearable. We made it into Launceston and met the majority of the northerners at the Inveresk Railyards carpark. We waited patiently for the slackers, and those who weren’t sure on directions, while we chatted with even more new faces, and a couple of the GTrydaz crew turned out too. We finally headed off, destination Bridport, via the Sideling. I decided to tag along with my friendly Rydaz rep, BJM in the out of place VW Bora (or Borat as it came to be known). However, the little german was no slouch on a twisty slippery road and handled things with ease, and better than one particular AWD RS Liberty. We’d come up on some traffic so Raz comes over the UHF and says, “we’re gonna pull over up here to let the traffic get well ahead” we drive for a further minute and Raz still hasn’t pulled up the freight train. BJM jumps on the radio, “Hey Raz, are you gonna pull off or what? There’s plenty of good spots.” And then along came the taunts about male masturbation, socks and the leather interior of the Bora were all included, need I say more!! Quick stop to water the trees and we’re off again. Sideling Targa stage, Following Tassieboy and his GF (GT Fozz), and Jaz’s RS highlighted the extra power of the RS over both other vehicles by the constant “tail wagging” Jaz was experiencing. We finally all rock up to the lookout and carpark for a quick rest, and to let the cars cool down. Before heading off there was another event to take place but, EDIT……………………………………… Back into the Bora for the run down into Scottsdale, where this time we were being followed by Jaz, and through his valiant attempts to keep up with the little vee dub ended in a slow motion pirouette, between two blind corners. I jump on the UHF, “Jaz are you ok?” “Yep, it was all under control.” BJM and I burst into laughter… “Jaz, I had the bloody video camera pointed the wrong way.” “Well how about I give you some warning next time!!” Anyway nothing was hit, car was ok but I’m pretty sure when we stopped in Scottsdale, Jaz was in need of a new pair of shorts. Short trip into Bridport where we had a great BBQ lunch, even if Raz did go overboard with the Seasoned Salt, and Theo went to get bread and returned with half of the Bridport IGA, chips, biscuits, juice, shapes…… Crap was spoken, sausages were eaten seagulls were fed and Riddock’s Gen 2 Libby conversion was discussed. Time to hit the road again, and back to Launceston via Pipers River. This leg I travelled in Brad’s “sex on wheels” Gen 2 Lib Wagon. It’s currently in the middle of some upgrades and the boost control is governed by the weight of his right foot. Now Brad can stand up inside a 44 gallon drum and not see out but on several occasions the needle on the boost gauge hit the stopper at the high end of the scale, about 25 PSI. Good enough for whellspin of all 4 wheels in 3rd gear. Good fun!! Launceston arrived in no time and my chauffer had to hit the road back to Hobart, so Nige, Simeon and myself jumped back into the WGX and headed south. We pulled over in Perth ‘cause Nige thought the headlights weren’t working. So we pulled all the fuses and nothing seemed wrong. We turned the lights back on and they were working again. However, no dash lights. So I suggest to Nige “You don’t have the dash lights just dimmed all the way do you?” Sure enough, that’s the problem. Back on the road and after some awesome singing by me and a rather uneventful trip we’re returned home, 11 hours after departure. A great day was had by all and relatively incident free. OK when’s the next one??
